If you sell online and advertise on Google, your product feed is your most important ad. Every Shopping ad, and most of what Performance Max shows, is built from the data you send to Google Merchant Center. Google uses that data to decide which searches your products appear for and how the ad looks.
That makes Google Shopping feed optimization one of the highest-return tasks in e-commerce advertising. Better feed data means more relevant impressions, higher click-through rates and lower cost per acquisition, without spending another dollar on ads.
Here are the 12 fixes we start with for every online store.
Titles and descriptions
1. Put the right words first in product titles
Titles carry the most weight for matching searches. A proven structure for most categories:
Brand + Product type + Key attributes (gender, size, colour, material, model)
| Before | After |
|---|---|
| “The Everyday Tote” | “[Brand] Leather Tote Bag for Women – Black, Laptop Size, Full-Grain Leather” |
| “Ultra Pro 3000” | “[Brand] Ultra Pro 3000 Cordless Stick Vacuum – 45 Min Battery, HEPA Filter” |
Keep the most important information within the first 70 characters, because that’s roughly what shoppers see in the ad.
2. Match titles to how people search
Use the words shoppers type, not internal names. If customers search “running shoes” and you call them “performance trainers”, include “running shoes” in the title. Your search terms report in Google Ads is the best source for this language.
3. Write useful descriptions
Descriptions matter less than titles for matching, but they still help. Describe what the product is, what it’s made of, who it’s for and what makes it different, using natural language. Avoid promotional text like “best price” or “free shipping” in the description.
Images
4. Use a clean, high-quality main image
The main image should show the product clearly on a plain, light background with no watermarks, logos or promotional overlays. Blurry or cluttered images get fewer clicks and can be disapproved.
5. Add additional and lifestyle images
Use additional_image_link for alternate angles, the product in use and close-ups of details. These can appear in Performance Max and free listings and help shoppers decide.
Product data and attributes
6. Submit correct GTINs and brand
Where products have manufacturer GTINs (UPC, EAN, ISBN), submit them along with the brand. Correct identifiers help Google understand exactly what you sell and match you to searches for specific models.
7. Fill in optional attributes
Attributes such as colour, size, material, pattern, gender, age_group and product_highlight help Google match long-tail searches and power filters in Shopping results. Apparel products require several of these.
8. Choose accurate product categories and types
Google assigns a google_product_category automatically, but check it’s correct. Use product_type to add your own category path, which is also handy for organizing campaigns.
Pricing, promotions and availability
9. Keep price, stock and shipping accurate
Mismatches between your feed and your landing page cause disapprovals and wasted clicks. Sync your feed at least daily, and more often during sales, so prices and availability stay current.
10. Show sale prices and promotions
Use sale_price and sale_price_effective_date to show strikethrough pricing, and set up promotions in Merchant Center for discount codes or free-shipping offers. Promotions add an extra call-out to your ads and often lift click-through rate.
Structure for smarter bidding
11. Add custom labels for margin and performance
Custom labels are the bridge between your feed and your bidding strategy. Tag products by margin tier, best sellers versus slow movers, price band and seasonality. You can then build Shopping and Performance Max campaigns that bid more aggressively on profitable products and less on the rest. Our Performance Max for e-commerce guide shows how to structure campaigns around these labels.
12. Monitor Merchant Center diagnostics every week
Check the diagnostics page for disapproved products, warnings and missing attributes. A best seller disapproved for a mismatched price can cost you sales for days before anyone notices.
How to make feed changes without touching your website
Most stores don’t want product names on their website rewritten just for Google. You don’t have to. There are three common ways to optimize the feed separately:
- Supplemental feeds in Merchant Center. Upload a Google Sheet with product IDs and the attributes you want to add or override – new titles, custom labels, product highlights. Merchant Center merges it with your main feed.
- Feed rules. Merchant Center rules can build titles from other attributes (for example, brand + product type + colour), fill in missing values or set custom labels based on price.
- Feed management apps. Tools that plug into Shopify, WooCommerce or BigCommerce let you edit titles in bulk, map attributes and schedule updates, which is useful for large catalogues.
Whichever you use, keep a record of what changed and when, so you can connect feed updates to changes in performance.
Don’t forget free listings
Products in your Merchant Center feed can also appear in free listings across the Shopping tab, Google Images and other Google surfaces. Every improvement you make to titles, images and attributes helps those free listings too, so feed optimization pays off even beyond your ad budget. Check the free listings performance in Merchant Center alongside your paid Shopping results.
Prioritize the products that matter
If you have thousands of products, don’t try to fix everything at once. Start with:
- Best sellers – small gains on high-volume products have the biggest impact.
- High-margin products – these can afford more ad spend if they get more visibility.
- Products with high impressions but low click-through rate – usually a title, image or price problem.
- Disapproved or limited products – they earn nothing until fixed.
Feed optimization checklist
| Area | Check |
|---|---|
| Titles | Brand + product type + key attributes, important words in the first 70 characters |
| Images | Clean main image, additional lifestyle images, no overlays |
| Identifiers | GTIN and brand submitted where available |
| Attributes | Colour, size, material, gender, age group, highlights filled in |
| Categories | Correct google_product_category and product_type |
| Pricing | Prices, sale prices and stock synced at least daily |
| Promotions | Active promotions set up in Merchant Center |
| Custom labels | Margin, performance, price band and season labels |
| Diagnostics | No unresolved disapprovals or critical warnings |
How to measure the impact
After making feed changes, compare the following for the affected products over two to four weeks:
- Impressions and click-through rate – better titles and images usually lift both.
- Cost per acquisition and ROAS – more relevant matching should bring more efficient sales.
- Search terms – check that products now appear for more specific, higher-intent searches.
Compare your results to your break-even ROAS to see which products are genuinely profitable to advertise.
